Z-Wave in 2026: regional frequencies, S2, Long Range, and which hubs still speak it

Short answer: Z-Wave is alive but regional: a US-frequency device will never pair with an EU hub, no firmware update can fix it, and only six of the 32 hubs we track still carry the radio built in. Where it shines in 2026: locks and security sensors (mandatory S2 encryption), interference-free sub-GHz range, and — in North America — Z-Wave Long Range reaching the far end of the property without a mesh.
The frequency trap
Unlike 2.4 GHz Zigbee, Z-Wave uses regional sub-GHz bands: ~908.4 MHz in North America, ~868.4 MHz in Europe, others for ANZ/Japan/etc. The radio hardware is band-specific — importing a US-market lock into Germany buys you a paperweight. Before any Z-Wave purchase, match the device's region code to your hub's; our device pages flag this in every Z-Wave verdict. Notably absent: everything from Apple, Google, Amazon (outside Ring), Aqara, IKEA, and the newer SmartThings Station. Z-Wave also has no path into Matter except through a bridging hub — a Home Assistant or SmartThings setup can re-export Z-Wave devices to Matter ecosystems, which is how a Z-Wave lock ends up in Apple Home.
S2, Long Range, and the 800-series refresh
- S2 security has been mandatory for certification since 2017 — encrypted pairing with a device-specific PIN. It's the main reason Z-Wave still owns a large share of the lock and security-sensor market; browse the 2,311 Z-Wave devices in the dataset and note how many are locks, sensors, and sirens.
- Z-Wave Long Range (North America, spreading elsewhere) trades mesh for star topology: one hub talking directly to devices at ranges Zigbee can't touch — mailbox sensors, gate controllers, outbuildings — with thousands of node slots. The device and hub both need LR support (800-series hardware, e.g. the Hubitat C-8 line).
- 800-series silicon brought better battery life and range to new devices, but Z-Wave's real moat is backward compatibility: a 2010 switch still joins a 2026 controller — see Z-Wave Plus for the generation markers.
Choosing Z-Wave in 2026 — or not
Pick Z-Wave when you want locks and security devices on an encrypted, interference-free band with a local hub — Hubitat and Home Assistant households get the most from it. Skip it if your controllers are Apple/Google/Amazon-only, if you're in a rental where the regional lock-in hurts resale, or if cheap-and-plentiful matters more than certified-and- encrypted — that's Zigbee's turf.
