Choosing a smart home hub in 2026: radios, ecosystems, and local control

Short answer: pick the ecosystem your phones and voice assistants already live in, then buy the hub in that ecosystem whose radios cover the device protocols you own or plan to buy. If you want everything local and maximally capable, the answer is Home Assistant, Hubitat, or Homey Pro; if you want minimal fuss, the flagship hub of your phone's ecosystem is usually right.

Step 1: Let your phones pick the ecosystem

The hub decision is really an ecosystem decision, and the ecosystem is mostly decided by what is already in your pockets and on your shelves. An iPhone household that talks to Siri should default to Apple Home; Android households split between Google Home and Alexa by speaker loyalty; Samsung homes get SmartThings integration for free. The independents — Home Assistant, Hubitat, Homey — are the choice when no single vendor's app should own your home, and all three still connect to the voice ecosystems afterward. Thanks to Matter and multi-admin, this choice is less irreversible than it was: a Matter device bought today moves ecosystems without repurchase.

Step 2: Count the protocols you actually own

Inventory your devices — current and realistically planned — by protocol: Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread. The hub must carry a radio (or border router) for each, or you will be stacking extra bridges later. Step 3: Decide how much you care about local control

Local control determines what happens when your internet is down and how fast a motion-triggered light responds. Home Assistant, Hubitat, and Homey Pro run everything on the hub; Apple Home is local for control and automations; SmartThings runs many automations on-hub; Alexa and Google still lean on the cloud for voice and some routines. If "the lights must work during an outage" is a requirement rather than a preference, weight the fully local column heavily — it is the one property you cannot patch in later with another purchase.

Step 4: Price in subscriptions

Most hubs on this page have no mandatory fee, but the exceptions are structural, not fine print. Ring Alarm's useful features sit behind Ring Home plans; Homey's cheap Bridge requires a Homey Premium subscription to be worth much (the Pro does not); some camera-adjacent features on Alexa and Google are subscription-gated. A $30 price difference between hubs is noise next to $100 a year, every year.

Step 5: Buy the radios you'll want in two years

Device catalogs shift slowly; radios in a hub are forever. Two safe bets as of mid-2026: Thread device volume keeps growing (battery sensors and locks especially), so a built-in border router is worth having even if you own zero Thread devices today; and Zigbee's 5,405-device catalog is not going anywhere, so a Zigbee radio keeps the cheapest sensors on the table.
