Why won't my Zigbee device pair? Brand-locked hubs and other traps

Short answer: the most common culprit isn't the device — it's a brand-locked hub radio. The Hue Bridge, IKEA DIRIGERA, Aqara hubs, and Bosch Controller II all speak Zigbee but only pair their own brand. If your hub is on the open list below, the fix is usually a reset, a shorter distance, or a Wi-Fi channel conflict.
Zigbee is a standard — pairing policy isn't
Every device in our Zigbee directory speaks the same 2.4 GHz protocol, and in radio terms almost any Zigbee device can join almost any coordinator. But the hub's software decides what it will accept and what it can actually do with a device once joined. Vendor hubs that double as ecosystem gatekeepers whitelist their own products; open coordinators accept anything and lean on community driver databases for functionality.

This is why a Sonoff sensor that pairs instantly with a ZBDongle-E gets nowhere with a Hue Bridge, and why our device pages show "Not compatible" against these hubs for third-party gear. The lock works in both directions, note: Hue bulbs can leave the bridge and join an open coordinator, but third-party devices can't come the other way.
The open coordinators
Hubs that pair any standard Zigbee device: Amazon Echo (4th gen) and Echo Hub, SmartThings hubs, Hubitat, Homey Pro, the Tuya gateway, SONOFF iHost, and any Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA setup on a USB coordinator. Joining is only half the story though — an exotic device may pair and then expose nothing useful if the hub has no driver for it. The open-source converter databases are the deepest, which is why DIY coordinators handle the long tail best.
Four other reasons a healthy device won't join
- It's still married to its old network. Zigbee devices remember their last coordinator. Factory-reset the device (usually a 5–10 second button hold or a power-cycle dance — the manual's reset ritual is not optional) before re-pairing.
- Distance and interference. Zigbee shares 2.4 GHz with Wi-Fi. Pair the device within a couple of meters of the coordinator first, then move it; and if your Wi-Fi sits on channel 11, Zigbee channel 11–14 territory overlaps it. Mains-powered Zigbee devices act as repeaters, so a sparse network strengthens as it grows.
- The permit-join window closed. Most coordinators only accept new devices for 60–254 seconds after you tell them to. Slow battery devices sometimes miss it — reopen the window and wake the device by pressing its button.
- It's a white-label variant with a quirky firmware. Hundreds of Tuya-made devices ship under dozens of brand names with the same radio module and slightly different firmware. If a rebrand misbehaves, search the community database by the Zigbee model ID (our device pages list them) rather than the box name.
